In order to help you with our media section, I would like to take the time to name all of the genre's of music that you may encounter on our site. This may help you understand the type of music you are interested in listening and searching for! Note: If an artist sings in a non-English language, they will be placed in a language genre. Otherwise they are sorted by style of music. Also, in extreme cases such as DBSK/TVXQ where there are many aliases for the same group, only their main name of the band will be used.
This is one of the more popular types of genre here at Hikaru Hoshi. Rock is pretty generic. Basically, this is any type of music that is a bit more upbeat, with a large ammount of guitars and drums. Many of the mainstream songs are in this category. Usually these types of bands have one lead singer, and the rest of the band members play the instruments. Some of the bands that we have in the rock genre are Nickleback, Fallout Boy and 10 Years
Alternative Rock, or just alternative, is rock denoted by usually a darker note, or more of a punkish type, since we put punk rock under this genre. Usually these bands are not so much mainstream, but are wonderful in their own type of music style. Currently, we classify Sum 41, Aiden, and Eve 6 as Alternative, just for an example.
Dance, trance or techno are grouped together. Hopefully, this genre isn't too hard to distinguish. Most of these songs do not have a whole lot of vocals, but they rely on the beat and instruments to carry the song. We consider Draft Punk, Eifiel 65 and Alex C. as dance bands.
Easy listening consists of artists and bands that are on a bit of a slower tempo. The popular genres of soul, jazz, blues and rhythm are all bundleded in this genre. Basically, think of it as easy on the ears. Some people that we would put in the easy listening genre are Dean Martin, Jamie Lidell and John Mayer.
Hip-hop is any kind of music that has lots of beat and rhythm. This also includes rap and all assorted kinds of music. We consider Fort Minor, Jibbs and Fergie as examples of hip-hop artists.
Indie Rock is very much like alternative rock in definition and style. The major difference is that alt. rock usually has more of a harsh sound, where indie rock usually is more quiet and slower. Folk groups are also considered in this genre. Most of the artists in this genre are also not mainstream, but they are awesome! We would consider Death Cab for a Cutie, Rocky Votolato and Beck as Indie Rockers.
Pop music is generally assoicated with the mainstream music, usually for younger audiences, or crazy-fanshouting girls. Sometimes, music from this genre also crosses over to the hip-hop scene. Pop artists that we have on our database include Everlife, Ashley Parker Angel and Ryan Graves.
The Japanese genre consists of both Japanese rock and pop. Basically anything in the Japanese language is in this genre. Artists that we are fond of in this category are Asian Kung-Fu Generation, Miyavi and the GazettE.
The Chinese genre consists of any artists from China. Examples include JJ Lin and Huang Yi Da.
As you probably guessed, these are all Korean artists. Yay for the Korean wave! Examples include DBSK and Alex.
More or less the same as the other foreign language groups, the Spanish and Italian genresconsists of any group or artist in the Spanish or Italian languages. They can be from Spain, Mexico, Italy, or any pais espanol. Some that we have on our database are Shakira, Cafe Tacuba and Chayanne.
These two are seperate, but very similar genres. Basically, these are any types of artists that speak that language. We would consider a few songs by Kate Ryan and Blankass as French, and some songs by Tokio Hotel and Alex C as German.
Hindi consists of all music that you would usually find on Bollywood films. This is a random fact, but Bollywood actors and actresses do not actually sing their own songs. Someone else does. Different, eh? Examples of these include Sukhwinder Singh and Labh Janjua.
The soundtrack genre are songs that come from movies or TV shows, etc. Usually, they do not have many vocals since they are the songs for the series or movie. However, there are some exceptions, especially when they come from various artists, such as The Hairspray Official Soundtrack< and Wicked Soundtrack.
